A-Z: General definitions: Heracles and Cerberus

Definition

The twelfth (last) labour of Heracles. Eurystheus sent Heracles into the Underworld to fetch Cerberus. While he was there, Heracles saw Theseus and Peirithous, stuck to their chairs in eternal punishment for trying to abduct Persephone. Heracles managed to rescue Theseus, but was unable to save his friend. Hades agreed that Heracles could take Cerberus, but only if he overpowered the dog without using any weapons. He did this, and took Cerberus to show to Eurystheus before returning the dog to the Underworld.
