A-Z: General definitions: Heracles and the Augean Stables
Definition
The fifth labour of Heracles. Heracles' fifth Labour was to clean out the stables of King Augeas in a single day. These stables held the King's many herds of cattle, and had never been cleaned out. Heracles broke holes in the walls and diverted two rivers, which swept through the stables, carrying the accumulated dung with them.
