A-Z: General definitions: Heracles and the Cattle of Geryon

Definition

The tenth labour of Heracles. The hero had to fetch the cattle of triple-bodied Geryon. This involved a very long journey, during which he set up the Pillars of Heracles. He threatened Helios with his bow for making him so hot. Impressed by this, Helios lent him the great golden bowl in which he himself sailed from west to east each night. Having killed Geryon and captured the cattle, Heracles used this bowl to transport the cattle part of the way home.
