A-Z: General definitions: Heracles and the Hydra of Lerna

The second labour of Heracles. Eurystheus sent Heracles to kill the Hydra of Lerna, a serpent with many heads, which grew two new heads for each one cut off. As soon as Heracles cut off a head, Iolaus, his nephew helping him for the first time, cauterised each stump. Heracles then took the Hydra's poisonous blood to use on his own weapons. Eventually and indirectly, this blood caused his own death.
