A-Z: General definitions: Heracles and the Nemean Lion
Definition
The first labour of Heracles. Eurystheus ordered Heracles to kill a huge lion that was terrorising a wide area. The lion's skin could not be penetrated by weapons, so Heracles strangled it with his bare hands. He skinned it using its own claws, and thereafter wore the skin as a cloak, with the head as a helmet. When Eurystheus saw how huge the lion had been, he ordered a large jar to be made. From now on, when Heracles returned to show his trophies, Eurystheus hid in this jar.
