A-Z: General definitions: Heracles and the Stymphalian Birds
Definition
The sixth labour of Heracles. Great flocks of birds lived in the woods around Lake Stymphalus. They may have been a nuisance purely through their numbers, although one authority describes them as huge, man-eating birds with bronze beaks. Heracles frightened them into flight with a bronze rattle, and then shot them, possibly with a sling.
