A-Z: General definitions: Peirithous

Definition

Peirithous was the King of the Lapiths, a Greek tribe, son of Ixion, and friend of Theseus. The Centaurs were grandsons of Ixion, and believed that they should have a share of the country. At first, they were content with the land given them, but when Peirithous invited them to his wedding with Hippodameia, they became drunk and attempted to carry off the women. A famous battle resulted, in which Peirithous was the victor. He is also famous for his friendship with Theseus, and their attempts to carry off Helen and Persephone.
