A-Z: General definitions: Vulgate

The Latin version of the Bible most widely used in the West. It was created by Jerome from the various Old Latin versions of the Bible and his translations of Greek and Hebrew texts around the end of the 4th century AD. The edition produced by the English scholar Alcuin (d. 804) became widely accepted although texts were never completely standardised and some Masses continued to include readings from the Old Latin version.
