Definition

A form of adjective (or adverb) which suggests the strongest form. The normal adjective would be the positive form ' e.g. fine, green, dark. The comparative form compares it with another ' e.g. 'this is a finer painting; that is a greener lawn; yesterday was a darker day'. The superlative form suggests the best or worst: 'this is the finest painting in the exhibition; that is the greenest lawn I have ever seen; today is the darkest day I have known'.
