A-Z: Books of the Bible: Amos
Genre
OT Prophecy (minor prophets)Description
A contemporary of Hosea, Amos depicts God's voice as the roar of a lion; judgement is passed on each of Israel's neighbours in turn followed (to her astonishment) by Israel herself.
Big ideas: Judgement
The Bible describes God as the unique supreme being, creator and ruler of the universe.
1. Wisdom.
2. A decision about guilt, and / or the passing of sentence by the person presiding over a court of justice.
3. In the Bible, God's verdict on human behaviour especially on the Day of Judgement at the end of time.
The Old Testament frequently refers to Israel as the Promised Land allocated to God's children. Prophecies refer to it as his chosen nation and the one out of which the Messiah would come.
