A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: A lame man healed

One day, Peter and John went to the Temple in Jerusalem for the afternoon prayer time. At the temple gate called Beautiful, a lame man, carried there every day, sat begging. Peter and John A lame man with Peter and Johnstopped and looked at him, calling for his attention. The man hopefully asked them for money.

‘I have no money to give you,’ Peter said, ‘but I give you what I do have: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!’ He took hold of the man’s right hand and helped him up. Immediately the man’s feet and ankles became strong enough to support him. He walked and then jumped around, going with them into the Temple courts to thank God for his healing. Everyone there was astonished: they knew this man well and could see that his healing was genuine.

Peter began to talk to the crowd, explaining that it was Jesus’ power which had healed the man, not him and John. When he went on to talk about Jesus rising from death, the priests and the Sadducees were worried. They and the Temple guards arrested Peter and John and, as it was late by then, threw them into prison to await trial.

The next day, in front of the Sanhedrin, Peter again spoke about Jesus as the Messiah. The Council was furious but, because they knew that the crowd could see this healing was real, they could do nothing except warn Peter not to speak of such things. ‘We have to speak about what we have seen and heard,’ Peter said. The Council threatened the two men again but had to release them.

The story illustrates:

  • The power of Jesus to heal, available to his followers
  • The courage of Jesus’ followers in the face of threats
  • That even Jesus’ enemies could not refute the reality of miracles in his name.
