A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: Parable of the talents

Definition

Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of God is like this. A man was going on a long journey. He shared out his wealth among his three servants, according to their ability. He gave one five talents of money (an amount worth several hundred pounds), one two talents and just one talent to the third. The first two servants each doubled their money through care and work. The third servant, however, just hid his talent in the ground.

The parable of the talents‘When their master came back, the first two servants eagerly showed him what they had achieved. Their master congratulated them and told them that he would entrust them with even more as they had been faithful and careful with just a little of his wealth.

‘Then the third servant came. He explained that, as he knew how hard and strict his master was, he had been afraid of losing the talent with which he had been entrusted, so he had buried it. His master was furious.

‘You are a lazy and wicked servant!’ he shouted.

Then he ordered his men to take the one talent from him and to give it to the man who now had ten.

‘Whoever has much will be given more. But he who has nothing will have even what he has taken away from him.’

Then he told them to throw the third servant out of the master’s house.’

The story illustrates:

  • The belief that God gives people differing gifts, circumstances and abilities, which he expects to be used and developed for the good of his kingdom.
