A-Z: General definitions: Leto
Definition
Leto was one of Zeus' lovers. When Leto was pregnant, Hera, in her jealousy, forbade any land to shelter her, saying that her child would not be born in sunlight. Leto wandered through many lands, finally finding a welcome on the then floating island of Delos. Some stories say that Poseidon made a wave of water stand over the island to cut off the light. After a long labour, made longer because Hera would not allow the goddess of childbirth to attend her at first, Leto gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. Both children defended Leto against her enemies throughout her life.Early lover of Zeus and mother by him of Apollo and Artemis. (Roman name, Latona.)
