Definition

The language of the ancient Romans which gradually became the language of the part of the Christian Church which owed allegiance to Rome. As it was used throughout the Christian world for services and as the Bible was published in Latin for centuries, it became a language commonly used for all western scholarship until the 17th century. The publication of the Bible and Prayer Book in English and in other European languages was one of the key goals of Protestants.
