A-Z: General definitions: Line
Definition
A line of poetry is significantly different from a line of prose, in that it is constructed deliberately as a pattern unit of meaning, surrounded by space. References and quotations from poetry are usually given by line numbers. A line of argument, usually in prose text, refers to the shape and structure of the argument.
In written text, the ordinary plain form of language, not organised into verse form. It is often contrasted with the term 'poetry'.
1. The fundamental term for any written piece of work; 2. A book to be studied in an academic context; 3. In preaching, the section of the Bible upon which the sermon is based.
