A-Z: General definitions: George VI

Definition

George (1895 - 1952) was the second son of George V and became King when his elder brother Edward VIII abdicated the British throne in 1936. At that time public faith in the monarchy was low and George, with the support of his Queen, Elizabeth, worked hard throughout his reign, notably during the Second World War. By the time of his death, he had restored the popularity of the monarchy. See article on twentieth century Monarchy.
