A-Z: General definitions: Witch of Endor

Definition

A witch consulted by Saul, first king of Israel, for advice in his war against the Philistines. Saul deceived the witch by going to her in disguise. He asked her to bring up the spirit of the departed prophet Samuel. When she did this, she realised who Saul was. The spirit of Samuel rebuked Saul because he had not followed God's commands and he predicted that Saul and his sons would die the next day in battle with the Philistines. The prophecy was fulfilled (1 Samuel 28:1-19).
