Definition
(1) The Old Testament frequently refers to Israel as the Promised Land allocated to God's children. Prophecies refer to it as his chosen nation and the one out of which the Messiah would come. Modern day Israel was created after the Second World War. (2) The name given by God to Jacob, who became the father of the Twelve Tribes of Israel and gave his name to (3) the kingdom settled by those tribes. At the division of the Israelites in two after the death of Solomon in 922BC the northern kingdom was called Israel.
