Definition
In the Old Testament Abraham was called by God to search for the land God promised to him and told he would be the 'father of many nations'. Fathered Ishmael with Hagar, his wife's servant (Genesis 16:3; Genesis 16:15). His previously barren wife Sarah then gave birth to Isaac (Genesis 21:2-3). Seen as 1st patriarch (father) of Israel, with whom God made a covenant (binding promise) (Genesis 17:7-8).
