A-Z: General definitions: Education Act of 1870
Definition
The first piece of government legislation which dealt specifically with the provision of schools in England and Wales. School boards were set up to build and manage schools locally, drawing their funding from local rates. The aim was to provide education for children ages 5-12, to improve educational standards and help Britain compete industrially.
