A-Z: General definitions: Elijah

Definition

Important Old Testament prophet who was active in the northern kingdom of Israel 9th C. BCE. Came from Tishbe of Gilead (1 Kings 17:1-2). He opposed rulers of his time, including Ahab and his wife Jezebel, who promoted the worship of pagan gods. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest which he won; performed miracles, and was said to have been taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (see Chariots of Fire). Later his name was associated with the one who would announce the coming of the expected Messiah.
