Definition

An Elizabethan theatre associated with the playwright William Shakespeare built in London in 1599.  It was destroyed by fire in 1613 and the following year a new theatre was built which then closed in 1642.  In 1997 Shakespeare’s Globe, a modern reconstruction close to the site of the original theatre, was opened.
