Definition

1. prose texts from one person to another, not usually meant to be literary texts. However, one of the earliest forms of the English novels was as a series of letters between the main character and others. These novels are called epistolary novels from the term epistle. Letters continue to be a common device of novels, allowing a character a different voice. 2. Literary texts were once termed letters.
