A-Z: Common sayings from the Bible: All my worldly goods
Usage
Technically refers to everything that someone possesses of calculable value; often used to imply that one is destitute (i.e., having no worldly goods).Definition
Earlier promises in the marriage service vow loyalty and love between the couple; in this promise they pledge to share all they possess in the world. 'With this ring I thee wed ... and with all my worldly goods I thee endow' (Taken from the book of Common Prayer, 1662, Marriage service). 'I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage ' and all that I have I share with you' (Taken from the Common Worship, Marriage service). In the Bible the promise, or contract, between a man and a woman committing them to a life together, is also used as an image of the relationship between God and his people. .
