Definition
James, 1566 – 1625, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, became King of Scotland as James VI from 1567 and then following the union of the Scottish and English crowns in 1603 became James I, King of England and Ireland. He commissioned or authorised a translation of the Bible - see King James Bible.
The translation of the Bible in English which was produced in 1611 by a group of scholars appointed by King James I. It is the origin of many common phrases and sayings in the English language.
