A-Z: General definitions: King David

Definition

In the Old Testament the second king of Israel, after Saul, anointed by Samuel (1 Samuel 13:14). He killed Goliath and defeated the Philistine army; committed adultery with Bathsheba who became pregnant so David had her husband Uriah murdered and took her to be his wife. David later repented of these actions, which is recorded in a Penitential Psalm, (Psalms 51:1-19). He fathered Solomon and wrote many other Psalms. Prophecy heralded that the 'Messiah' would be of David's line. Jesus was, like David, born in Bethlehem and of David's line. Held to be Israel's greatest king.
