Definition
A book containing the extracts from scripture to be read at public worship. Since this was the context in which most people encountered the Bible, the way in which passages were juxtaposed and the themes which they were used to illustrate strongly coloured their interpretation in popular thought.
Sacred writings. The New Testament uses the term to refer to the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). In time, the Christian Church recognised the Old and New Testaments as both containing God's authoritive written word.
1. Doing homage and giving honour and respect, especially to God. Acts of devotion. Human response to the perceived presence of the divine.
2. The part of the Christian liturgy usually consisting of sung material and prayers of thanksgiving.
The state of being whereby two items are deliberately placed together for contrast; in terms of drama, two contrasting events or scenes placed together, so that each is heightened in relation to the other.
