A-Z: General definitions: Locust

Definition

Large winged insects, often found in vast numbers, which destroy crops and devaste harvests. In the Old Testament book of Exodus a plague of locusts descends on Egypt. This was seen as a warning from God to Pharaoh who was refusing to let the Israelites leave their slavery (Exodus 10:3-19). In the New Testament John the Baptist is said to eat locusts and wild honey, an indication of an austere lifestyle in the desert (Mark 1:16).
