A-Z: General definitions: Golden calf

Definition

In the Old Testament book of Exodus, the people of Israel made a idol in the form of a golden calf whilst Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 32:1-4). Moses destroyed the golden calf, burning it and grinding it to powder (Exodus 32:19-20). Later in the Old Testament King Jereboam made two golden calves, placed in the cities of Bethel and Dan to try to stop people going to Jerusalem to worship (1 Kings 12:28-33).
