Definition
The name given in the apocryphal Acts of Pilate (part of the Gospel of Nicodemus) to the Roman soldier said to have pierced Christ's side with a spear during the Crucifixion (Jn 19:31). Later legends claimed that he had been cured of blindness when his eyes were touched by the blood which ran down the spear.
