A-Z: General definitions: Luddites
Definition
In Nottinghamshire in 1811 a series of riots, in which industrial machines were broken, marked the beginning of Luddism. Angry at the increasing use of mechanisation (rendering many unemployed) and poor working conditions in factories, the Luddites took their name from the mythical ‘Ned Ludd’, who advocated anti-industrialisation. Today it is a pejorative term for those opposing industrial and technological advances.
