Definition
King of Lydia. Tantalus had been a friend of the gods who had eaten with them, sharing their ambrosia and nectar. He misbehaved and stole some ambrosia. His punishment in Hades was to stand in a lake up to his neck in water, but to be unable to drink any, and with fruit growing above him which he could not eat.
