A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: The Word becomes flesh

Definition

At the beginning of all things, the Word was there. The Word was with God and the Word was in fact God. Everything was made through him. There was nothing made without him. In the Word was life, and that life lit the way for people. This light shines through the darkness and the darkness has not defeated it.

A man called John (known as John the Baptist) came from God to tell people about this light that was coming to them, this light that would light the way to God for everyone. This Word, this man, was part of the world, but the world did not recognise him for who he was. He came to his own people – but they did not accept him. But those few who did accept him, those who believed in him, he made them children of God through him: children born not by human choice or desire but by God’s will.

This Word became flesh and blood and lived among people. They saw his glory – the glory belonging solely to the only Son of the Father, filled with truth and grace.

The story illustrates:

  • The Christian belief that Jesus, as part of the Trinity, has always existed and was there at the Creation of the world
  • The Christian belief that Jesus is the Word of God: Christians believe that God is love and that Jesus is the embodiment and incarnation of that love.
