PoemDefinition
Martha tells her sister Mary that Jesus wants to speak with herSister of Mary of Bethany and Lazarus, whose home was visited by Christ. In Luke 10:38-42 she was described as 'busy with much serving'; as a result she became a symbol of the active life (practical service and involvement in the world).
The mother of Jesus. The Gospels state that Mary's pregnancy was brought about by the Holy Spirit and not through a human relationship; she is therefore known as the 'Virgin'.
The name given to the man believed by Christians to be the Son of God. Also given the title Christ, meaning 'anointed one' or Messiah. His life is recorded most fully in the Four Gospels.
