Big ideas: AngelsEastern wise men and astrologers expert in interpreting dreams. In the New Testament men whose interpretation of the stars led them to Palestine to find and honour Jesus with gifts signifying his kingship.

The mother of Jesus. The Gospels state that Mary's pregnancy was brought about by the Holy Spirit and not through a human relationship; she is therefore known as the 'Virgin'.
The name given to the man believed by Christians to be the Son of God. Also given the title Christ, meaning 'anointed one' or Messiah. His life is recorded most fully in the Four Gospels.
In the Old Testament the land where Joseph and Jacob found sustenance in times of famine, though later Israelites were held captive and made to work as slaves for the Pharaoh.
Herod the Great was born c.73BCE, and became the King of Judea in 42BCE. He was King when Jesus was born, and upon hearing of the birth of the new 'king of the Jews', ordered the slaughter of all male children under two years old in Bethlehem.
