Usage

Hypocrites.

Definition

Scribes were lawyers, people who could read and write and interpret the law. Pharisees were people who devoted themselves to keeping the law. They were the religious leaders of the time of Jesus, but their approach to holiness made it impossible for ordinary people to attain. Thus they are accused of hypocritically keeping God out of the reach of the people.
