A-Z: General definitions: Abel

Definition

The second son of Adam and Eve & nomadic shepherd. Abel and his brother Cain made sacrifices to God. Abel's was accepted; Cain's was rejected. So Cain murdered Abel, who was an innocent victim (Genesis 4:1-10). As a shepherd and innocent victim, Abel can be seen to prefigure Jesus the Good Shepherd who is presented in the New Testament as dying for the sins of others.
