Definition
Aeneas was a Trojan prince, the son of Anchises and the goddess Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans). When Troy fell he was sent by Zeus to found a successor to Troy in the west. Hera (Juno) did her best to oppose him, most notably by tricking him into falling in love with Dido, the queen of Carthage. But Aeneas eventually was compelled to follow his destiny and flee Carthage. Dido in despair committed suicide, vowing that her descendants would avenge her death on the descendants of Aeneas. Aeneas finally reached Italy, and after many difficulties settled in Latium where his descendants later founded Rome. The three wars which Rome fought with Carthage in the third and second centuries BC were supposedly the result of Dido's vow. Julius Caesar traced his decent through Aeneas' son Iulus back to Venus and according established the temple of Venus Genetrix (the founder of the family) in Rome. See also: Mount IdaRelated Topics
