A-Z: General definitions: Alpheus
Definition
A river-god, son of Oceanus and Tethys. There are a varied stories about him, one of which is that he fell in love with a nymph, Arethusa, as she was bathing in his waters. She ran away but he chased her, turning her into a well. Alpheus then turned himself into a river, running from Peloponnesus and joining with the waters in the well.
In classical mythology, a feminine spirit of the fields; in pastoral poetry a synonym for a young woman
