Definition

In the Old Testament, an elderly prophetess who, with Simeon, recognised Jesus as being the one who would bring forgiveness to the people of Israel. She was worshipping at the Temple in Jerusalem when Jesus was brought there as a baby to be dedicated to God (Luke 2:22-24; Luke 2:36-38).

Greek form of Hebrew hanna, 'grace'.
