A-Z: General definitions: Carthage

Definition

Carthage - a city founded by the Phoenicians in what is now Tunisia. According to legend, a local chieftain offered Dido as much land as could be covered by a single ox-hide to found Carthage on. Dido outsmarted him by cutting the ox-hide into little strips and laying them out end to end, thus claiming enough land to build a city on.
