Definition

Originally groups of hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, who adopted the mendicant pattern of ministry. The White Friars were brought to England c. 1241. They rejected the ownership of property and committed themselves to carrying the spiritual life out to lay people in the everyday world, through preaching and service.
