Definition
A strictly contemplative monastic order founded by St Bruno in 1084. First 'Charterhouse' established in England in 1175-6. Each monk lived in his own cell under a vow of silence, meeting with his brothers only for the Daily Office, Mass and occasional meals.
Traditionally a small, humbly furnished room / hut / alcove where a hermit, monk or nun lived.
The central religious service of the Roman Catholic Church, incorporating praise, intercession and readings from scripture. The central action is the consecration of the bread and wine by the priest.
