A-Z: General definitions: Gnosticism

Definition

A multi-faceted set of beliefs that historically rivalled Christianity. Gnostics believe that there are levels of the divine and of divine beings, and that access to the 'higher' levels is only to be gained by secret knowledge or 'gnosis'. Gnosticism was especially prevalent in the days of early Christianity, and their belief that salvation comes only through the acquisition of secret knowledge contrasts with the Christian belief that salvation is through faith in Christ.

Translation
