A-Z: General definitions: Virgin Birth

Definition

It is traditionally understood that Mary was, and remained, a virgin during both the conception and birth of Jesus (Luke 2:34-35). She later went on to have other children according to the usual procreative methods (Mark 3:31). The Virgin Birth was the fulfilment of an Old Testament prophecy (Isaiah 7:14).

Roman Catholics believe in the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary, recorded first by St Jerome in c. 383 A.D., which claims that she also maintained her virgin state throughout the remainder of her life. Compare to Immaculate Conception a term with which the Virgin Birth is often confused.
