Definition
The distinctive clothing worn by clergy when taking part in services of worship. Vestments originated in the ordinary clothes worn by Roman citizens in the early centuries AD. From 400-800 AD ministers continued to wear clothes from earlier generations while other fashions changed. By the ninth century, the wearing of vestments had become standard practice.
The collective term for priests and ministers of the church (as opposed to the non-ordained laity).
Religious ceremonies offering obedience and worship to God.
