Definition
Place of holiness or safety. The part of a church closest to the altar and hence held as particularly holy. In former times, accused criminals would sometimes 'seek sanctuary' ' that is, take refuge in this holiest part of the church where, traditionally, they were safe from arrest.
1. Term for a worshipping community of Christians.
2. The building in which Christians traditionally meet for worship.
3. The worldwide community of Christian believers.
A raised stucture on which religious ceremonies are performed.
