Definition

Abbreviation for Young Men's Christian Association. The YMCA was formed in London in 1844 as a body of young men committed to winning their friends to faith in Christ. The organisation also runs recreational and relief work. During the world wars, the YMCA provided for the needs of soldiers, the wounded and prisoners-of-war. Today it has an elaborate network of hostels, clubs, cafeterias, gymnasia, vocational training centres and holiday homes. The YWCA was founded in 1855, with activities parallel to its brother organisation.
