A-Z: General definitions: Yeast

Definition

A fungus used to make dough rise for bread-making and in the manufacture of beer, wine and spirits. The Israelites usually ate bread with yeast (Hosea 7:4), but for various purposes, yeast was omitted, for example during the Passover festival (Exodus 12:15). Jesus used 'yeast' as an image to teach about the influence of God's kingdom (reign), (Matthew 13:33; Luke 13:20-21) and to refer to the hypocritical teaching of the Pharisees, Sadducees and King Herod (Matthew 16:12). Paul used the idea of 'yeast' to warn the Corinthian church about the destructive effect of condoning a sin within their church body (1 Corinthians 5:6).
