Definition

The Jewish spring festival celebrating the deliverance of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. In the Book of Exodus the Israelites were commanded to place the blood of sacrificed lambs on the doorways of their houses so that they would escape God’s judgement on the Egyptians who were refusing to let them go free Exodus 12:1-13. According to the gospels, it was at the Passover meal before his death (the Last Supper) that Christ instituted the eucharist, comparing himself to a sacrificial lamb whose blood would save sinners.
